Some years ago I had the opportunity to work with students on a silent film scoring project in California, sponsored by the Mary Pickford Foundation, and quickly became interested in composing something to one of these beautiful works of art myself. Pickford was a genius: not just an actress, but also a producer, writer, businesswoman, and film industry pioneer. I especially liked the idea of not simply scoring the short film, but incorporating it into a larger movement where the music hints at and expands on the story’s charms.

Tender Hearts is dedicated to Lila Fagan for 36 years of outstanding service and leadership in music education.
